JURIX 2024: The Cyberjustice Laboratory at the heart of legal innovation

The Cyberjustice Laboratory participated in the 37th International Conference on Legal Knowledge and Information Systems, organized by the Foundation for Legal Knowledge Based Systems (JURIX). Held from December 11 to 13, 2024, at Masaryk University in Brno, Czech Republic, this prestigious event brought together researchers from around the world to discuss the intersection of law and technology.

This year’s conference focused particularly on large language models (LLMs) and their potential applications in the legal field.

A Strong Presence from the Cyberjustice Laboratory

The Cyberjustice Laboratory showcased its innovative research through various presentations:

1️⃣ LLMediator
The paper titled "Robots in the Middle: Evaluating LLMs in Dispute Resolution" explored the role of large language models in resolving disputes. This work was authored by Jinzhe Tan, Hannes Westermann, Nikhil Reddy Pottanigari, Jaromír Šavelka, Sébastien Meeùs, Mia Godet, and Karim Benyekhlef.

2️⃣ JusticeBot
A new version of JusticeBot, focused on legal risk management in the healthcare sector, was presented as a poster titled "AI in Healthcare: Navigating Legal Risk Assessment with JusticeBot" by Sébastien Meeùs, Valentina Dalla Giovanna, Samyar Janatian, Hannes Westermann, Karim Benyekhlef, and Grégory Lewkowicz.

 

The conference also provided an excellent opportunity to reconnect with Hannes Westermann, a former doctoral student at the Cyberjustice Laboratory at the University of Montreal. Hannes organized a workshop on Access to Justice and presented several of his recent research projects.
